The Halff Windham Foundation
Established in 2018, The Halff Windham Foundation is a small family foundation dedicated to fostering a more just and inclusive society by providing direct financial support for transformative projects in the arts and education. The foundation specifically funds programs that create life-changing opportunities for historically marginalized communities and initiatives that honor and amplify their voices, achievements, and lived experiences.
Our Impact
- Spring 2022: Provided initial funding for the Clarence Cunningham Student Emergency Fund at Earlham College, named for the school's first Black student-athlete. This discretionary fund assists the most vulnerable members of the Earlham community during emergencies.
- Summer 2022: Established the Bayard Rustin Award at Earlham College, honoring the life of the seminal Black, Gay, Quaker civil rights organizer. This annual award recognizes college juniors for their contributions to LGBTQ+ community life.
- Fall 2023: Provided FY2023/2024 financial support for Access Opera: Guild Open Rehearsals for Students at The Metropolitan Opera, which gives local students and educators live access to extraordinary performances.
- Fall 2023: Made an additonal five-year commitment to substantially expand the endowment for the Clarence Cunningham Student Emergency Fund.
- Spring 2024: Provided funding for Ainadamar at The Metropolitan Opera Association. This groundbreaking opera by Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov honors Federico GarcĂa Lorca, poet and playwright, highlighting themes of artistry, social justice, and identity.
- Fall 2024: Made an additonal five-year commitment of support for Access Opera: Guild Open Rehearsals.
- Winter 2025:Provided a 3 year major general operating grant to the Bayard Rustin Social Justice Center, which honors and celebrates the life and legacy of Bayard Rustin through acts of service; as well as providing a home for the Queer History Archive, a freely accessible public resource, preserving at-risk histories and stories that matter.
- Winter 2025: Provided funding for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay at The Metropolitan Opera Association. Based on the book by Michael Chabon, this new opera tells the story of two Jewish cousins in World War II-era New York City, one a refugee from wartime Poland and the other a closeted gay man, who create a Nazi-fighting comic book superhero.
Our Team
The Halff Windham Foundation is led by Larry Halff (President) and Randy Windham (Secretary). Larry and Randy were married in San Francisco since 2013 and now live in Northern Virginia with their crazy dog, Betty.
